Scene Description: With the awakening of the Chinese concept of “love of teeth”, oral hospitals and dental clinics are increasingly entering people’s lives. What is the development of AI medicine in the field of dentistry at a time when AI medicine is in full swing?
Key words: AI Medical Deep Learning CNN Orthodontics
Pale green chairs, dazzling lights, unable to open and close the mouth, involuntary frown, collision between the machine and teeth, voice from the facial jaw to the skull … You only need to look at the teeth once, all of which will go through in the same dental clinic.
Dental treatment and orthodontics have entered people’s lives more and more, as have stars. From S to Tang Yan to Gao Yuanyuan to Hu Ge, “wearing braces” has also contributed a lot to the improvement of their facial values.

Although dental treatment has become more and more routine, there are still many problems such as untimely diagnosis, opaque orthodontic industry, poor user experience, etc. In today’s “everything can be AI”, what can AI technology do to fully improve the dental experience?
AI Dental Caries Detection: Let Dental Caries Missed by Doctors Have No Place to Hide
Affected by changes in diet structure and oral health behaviors, the prevalence of caries among children in China is still on the rise.
According to the statistics of “Analysis Report on Market Prospect and Investment Strategic Plan of China’s Oral Health Care Industry from 2018 to 2023”, 56.69% of children aged 3 to 12 have dental caries. If not treated in time, a dental caries can destroy the whole tooth and implicate the central dental nerve.
Traditional dental caries diagnosis relies on X-ray radiography and direct intraoral examination to find occlusal caries. However, even dentists who have read thousands of dental films in clinical practice still have a missed diagnosis rate of 20%~40% for potential dental caries such as dental caries below teeth, interproximal caries and root caries.
In order to solve this problem, ParallelDots Company from the United States has developed an AI model to assist dental caries detection. Its sensitivity to potential dental caries is even higher than that of ordinary dentists.
ParallelDots collected 3,000 dental slices with dental caries labels in dental clinics across the United States as data sets for model training and learning, which is the dental caries diagnosis system.
The system consists of a 100-layer deep fully convoluted neural network (FCNN). Combined with algorithms, the machine can overcome the complexity of tooth anatomy and then mark dental caries on occlusal dental slices.
Compared with 3 certified dentists, the dental caries diagnosis system surpasses the average performance of dentists in sensitivity and accuracy. The predicted dental caries can be displayed in less than 4 seconds with an accuracy of 85%.

At present, ParallelDots has reached cooperation with several dental clinics. The dental caries diagnosis system can be seamlessly connected with all types of X-ray sensors and imaging software. Whenever patients take dental radiographs, the dental radiographs will be automatically uploaded to the system cloud for analysis. Within a few seconds, comments will be output and the high incidence areas and potential dental caries will be marked.
Dental caries diagnosis system helps dentists to judge and identify potential dental caries more quickly and accurately, while dentists feed back to the system and choose to accept or ignore the system judgment, thus continuously improving the accuracy of the system.
Invisalign: Orthodontics Induced by Algorithms and 3D Printing
In addition to treating dental caries, dental correction is becoming more and more common. When it comes to orthodontic treatment, people’s impression may still remain at the “Kouga” stage. In fact, artificial intelligence is already involved in this industry.
For example, Invisalign, which has been in flames for the past two years, has gained a large number of followers because of its high technology, near invisibility and easy cleaning.
Invisalign is the initiator of invisible tooth appliance and the most mainstream brand in the world. It was invented by Align Technology Company of California, USA. Its patented technology mainly includes four aspects:
This is also the first step in determining the orthodontic plan. Orthodontists can quickly and accurately capture high-resolution interactive 3D images of teeth in the patient’s mouth through the scanner of Invisalign. Doctors can control the scanning position of the scanner and scan one by one in sequence for about 20 minutes.

After scanning the 3D image of the entire tooth, it is next time to customize the treatment plan. The doctor will simulate 3D animation according to the generated tooth movement and combine ClinCheck’s guidance to input data, adjust the problem tooth and determine the orthodontic plan.
ClinCheck’s algorithm can accurately calculate the force required for each tooth movement, and can ensure that the teeth are adjusted in the correct order according to the data input by the doctor.

Many people may worry that the strength of the Invisalign is not as strong as that of the traditional braces. In fact, SmartForce can provide the appliance with a focus point that can be pressed lightly. It is small in shape and is not easy to be detected. Attaching to the teeth can play the role of pulling the handle and help the appliance to apply the appropriate force in the appropriate direction.

The soft and light force of Invisalign braces is invented after hundreds of material tests and years of painstaking research and development. It combines the professional knowledge of biomechanics and material science and is realized through 3D printing. It can closely fit with teeth, keep away from the distress of traditional braces that “cut the mouth” and make wearing more comfortable.
Future: Subversion of Dental Artificial Intelligence
Modern dentistry has developed greatly since the 17th century, and it has been more than 400 years, while artificial intelligence intervention in dentistry has only taken less than 20 years.
Relying on algorithms and 3D printing, Invisalign has developed the company’s market value to US$ 8 billion in 20 years. With decades of clinical experience accumulated by dentists, AI can be mastered in a few months, and the missed diagnosis rate is even lower than that of clinicians.
Whether it is dental caries prediction or Invisalign, artificial intelligence has gradually penetrated into all aspects of the dental industry. It is not dentists themselves but artificial intelligence that may subvert dentistry.
